To make cheddar cheese scones, you’ll need the following ingredients.


  • 5 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 3¼ tsp. Baking Powder
  • ½ tsp. Black Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. Dried Thyme
  • 1 2/3 cup Buttermilk
  • ¾ Unsalted Butter,
  • 6 Tbsp. Full-Fat Greek Yogurt
  • 1 ½ cup Shredded Cheddar
  • 1 tsp. Salt

You will need: Large Mixing Bowl, Wooden Spoon, Paring Knife, approx. 10″ x 13″ Cutting Board, Small Plate, 2 Baking Sheets

Serving size: 12 Scones


To Start:
  • Make a space in the fridge for the small plate to chill the butter in step 1
  • Make a space in your freezer for the cutting board to chill the dough in step 2
  • Reserve ½ cup all-purpose flour for dusting your surface.


Step 1 – Prepare Butter
  • Using a cutting board and paring knife, cut unsalted butter into pea sized pieces, put on the small plate, and set in the fridge until the end of step 2.
Step 2 – Mix the dough
  • In a large mixing bowl add all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, 1 tsp. salt, and black pepper. Stir with a wooden spoon.
  • Remove pre-diced unsalted butter from the fridge, add to the bowl. Use your hands to toss, breaking up any larger pieces by rubbing between your thumb and fingers.
Step 3 – Finish Dough and Chill
  • Add cold buttermilk and stir just until combined.
  • Add shredded cheddar, yogurt, and dried thyme and fold just until combined.
  • Dust the cutting board with a little flour and press out the dough into a rectangle about 1 inch thick.
  • Place in the freezer for 20-30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Step 4 – Portion and Bake
  • Remove dough from the freezer. Use a knife to cut into squares measuring about 3″ x 3″ so that you get about 12 scones.
  • Pro-tip: The baking time is set for this size, but if you prefer smaller portions, just lower the baking time 5-10 minutes depending on the reduction in size.
Step 5 – Bake and enjoy!
  • Place 6 scones on each baking sheet and place in the preheated oven.
  • Bake for 15 minutes and rotate the trays, baking for another 10 minutes until light golden brown.
  • Let cool and enjoy!
